Marcel Duchamp questioned popular symbole of his day as to what art actually is. Duchamp, a French artist residing in New York with the turn of the century, thought that it was to the artist to determine what artwork is. Duchamp is most known for a type of figurine he produced called " readymades”1. Examples of his readymades include a layer hanger nailed to the floor of his studio, a hat rack suspended in the ceiling, a typewrite cover concealing nothing, and a bicycle tire attached to a stool. Duchamp typically altered the objects in some way, sometimes by just turning the object on the side, or perhaps hanging it … anything at all other than the precise way it had been suppose to become placed in. Marcel Duchamp's perception was that because the artist chose the object being art, it was, even though the artist did not actually manufacture it. The word " readymade” was not basically in existence during his 1st readymades. The term didn't come about until after he found America coming from France in 1915. Duchamp himself said of these the next: " It was an interesting expression, but when I actually put a bicycle tire on a chair, the hand down, there is no idea of a " readymade, " or anything else. It absolutely was just a frenzymadness, desperation, hysteria, mania, insanity, delirium, derangement. I don't have any kind of special reason to do it, or any type of intention of showing this, or talking about anything. ” (From the article by Molly Nesbit titled His Common Sense- Marcel Duchamps in the magazine Art Forum. Oct. 1994)
